The Garter and Rib Stitch: A Stitch for a Nap-time Blanket

I really like this stitch; it's easy to remember and it comes out looking a bit like a thermal blanket.

Make a swatch of the pattern to decide your gauge. Then, using your gauge, determine how many stitches to cast on according to how wide you want your blanket or afghan.

I used size 9 needles and Red Heart Super Saver (about 24 oz, as I recall, for a 36"x50" blanket).

The Garter and Rib Stitch

On an uneven number of stitches:

Rows 1-4: Knit all stitches (garter stitch)
Row 5: k3 (for edging), *k1, p1*, repeat to the last 4 sts, k4.
Row 6: k3 (for edging), *p1, k1*, repeat to last 4 sts, p1, k 3.
Row 7: repeat row 5.

Continue in this manner until the afghan is about as long as you want it to be, then work 4 rows of garter stitch and bind off.
