The First Week

Friday July 12, 2002

Spent most of today getting thru Chicago and Milwaukee. Stopped at a funky little campground near Oshkosh. Someone turned part of their farm into a campground. A burro hollered and peacocks squawked and goats bleated but quiet human neighbors.

We attended the X-Amish reunion today in Weyauwega (spelling close), Wisconsin that Enos and Barb organize. It was a beautiful park and excellent food. I swung on the swing set, ate too much dessert and took a nap. Had a chance to visit with Barb and Enos for a bit. Will swapped stories with the other x-Amish.

Then on to Stevens Point where we are parked in Walmart parking lot for the night. Next we are looking to find a place to park for a month or so to get some work done. Will wants to get another good chunk of a large project done and needs better connection than the cell phone. Still don't have the right cord for cell phone for me. Maybe Minneapolis will provide a store.

Although it wasn't where we were originally headed, we ended up in a nice county park- Castle Rock in Adams County, Wisconsin. Lower than usual rates and pleasant spot shaded by tall pines near the lake. Seems to be a haven for fisherman and long term campers. Some folks have planted flower gardens! Cheap enough at $185/month.

We have decided to stay put for a day, hoping the holding tanks don't get too full before tomorrow morning. I don't have a good sense yet about how much the capacity is. Misser is happy to be stationery and Will and I have some work to do. Will is getting his newsletter finished and put to bed. I need to get the pdf file done for a client as well as getting caught up with the books, etc. Tomorrow is for laundry, haircut etc!

I was eager to be on the road this morning, even though we have been still for only 2 days. Drove to Sparta, Wisconsin where we did laundry and I got my haircut. Feels better to have it short again. And I enjoyed visiting with the stylist. She used to live in Duluth and recommends it highly.

Grabbed a few groceries at an Aldis and some supplies at Walmart (Dust Buster - yes!) and headed for the border. Finally in Minnesota! Took the river road up toward the twin cities. Some beautiful views.

Tonight we are staying at Frontenac State Park near Lake City, MN. The only campground I have ever known to have electricity at the campsite but no water. I suppose it is a winter freeze problem. We arrived with only a quarter tank of water as we didn't realize it would be an issue. Its enough to get by on tonight, if we are careful. On to the twin cities tomorrow.

Finally got the correct cable so I can get email on my machine. I feel renewed!

We got to visit with Charlie and Rachel this evening. They had us to their home for dinner. It was an enjoyable evening. They also took us to Sixth Chamber Book store (the one I used to order from online) and stocked up on books.

Staying at Lake Elmo Park Reserve here at Minneapolis/St. Paul. Another Minnesota park where electricity is provided but no water. On to Duluth tomorrow.
